Bringing Stadium Data to Life: AR for the Modern Football Fan
What if watching football could answer your questions in real-time? Not “who is that number 9?” ten minutes after a substitution, or endless debates about whether your midfielder is actually having a bad game. What if you could just tap a player and know?
That was our starting point when we partnered with PSV, ESPN and Cisco last year. Two big “what ifs” drove the project:
First: Can we bring all match data directly to fans, instantly? Whether you’re on your couch with a tablet or in the stadium with your smartphone, you should be able to access player stats, positioning, performance metrics, everything that turns armchair managers into informed analysts (or at least better arguers).
Second: Can we do this without disrupting existing infrastructure? We know how complex broadcast and stadium systems are. Changing anything is a nightmare. So we built our solution to work with existing data streams, no modifications needed.
The Result
We developed two applications. For home viewing, a tablet experience that felt genuinely magical, people couldn’t stop tapping players to see their stats. For the stadium, an AR smartphone app. Locate the corner flags, and you’re ready to overlay real-time data onto the pitch itself.
What’s Next
We have endless ideas. But restraint is crucial. The technology serves the fans, not the other way around. We need to hear what arguments you’re actually having during matches, what questions you want answered, what would genuinely enhance your experience.
After all, we’re fans too. That helps.
